Dr. Amy Gershkoff Bolles does not fit neatly into any single category. She has been a CEO, COO, CFO, and Board Director — a Princeton-trained data scientist who has led organizations ranging from small startups to global public companies, steered a $4.6 billion capital markets transaction, and helped shape the analytics operation behind a presidential campaign.
Today, as Managing Partner of Aurelia Lifestyle Brands, she is channeling decades of hard-won expertise into building purpose-driven consumer businesses rooted in community. Recognized among the world’s top innovators and most influential women in business, Dr. Bolles brings equal parts rigor and humanity to every boardroom and team she leads — proving that the most powerful kind of leadership is built not on title, but on discipline, clarity, and an unwavering commitment to the people around you.
In recognition of her leadership and successes, The Elite Success magazine features Dr. Amy Gershkoff Bolles in the edition Most Prominent Leaders Making a Difference in Business – 2026.
Built Through Persistence
Someone once called Dr. Bolles the most persistent person they had ever met. She took it as a compliment — and a blueprint. For her, persistence is not a personality trait; it is a leadership strategy that drives outcomes, raises expectations, and sets the standard for every team she leads.
That mindset shows up in her results. She has led multiple turnarounds and delivered strong exits for investors — often under difficult conditions. When challenges arise, she does not pivot away from the goal; she pushes harder toward it, and she expects the same from the people around her. In her world, obstacles are not detours – they are where real leadership begins.
Leading by Example: Representation, Equity, and Mentorship
Leadership, in her view, also ties closely to representation. Over the past two decades, women have made visible progress in leadership roles. Today, they hold about one quarter of C-level positions and nearly one third of board seats. Despite this progress, a clear gap remains: in the S&P 500, fewer than 10% of CEO, COO, and CFO roles belong to women, and women represent just 10% of Board Chairs for such companies. “We simply must make progress in representation if we are to change how companies are led,” Dr. Bolles said.
“Sponsorship is core to how we get there,” Dr. Bolles states. Looking back, she values the support that helped her step into C-level and Board positions: “both men and women made introductions, offered advice, connected me with opportunities, and encouraged me along the way,” she said. Those moments played a critical role in her growth and continue to influence how she leads today.
That influence now extends outward. She mentors emerging leaders and creates pathways for their growth. A strong focus remains on supporting women who aim to move into leadership roles. Through these efforts, she strengthens both the businesses she leads and the people who drive them forward.
Rooted in Community, Built for Growth
Aurelia Lifestyle Brands Inc. is a company that invests in lifestyle consumer services businesses with a strong community focus. The company builds its portfolio around locally owned-and-operated brick-and-mortar businesses. It places equal importance on business growth and community engagement: every investment reflects a clear commitment to support the community in which it operates.
The name “aurelia” means chrysalis, the cocoon stage for a caterpillar before transformation into a butterfly. This idea captures the company’s vision, as Aurelia Lifestyle Brands strives to create meaningful change for the guests who utilize their services and for the communities in which these businesses are located.
The company’s first investment, Spavia Marin, marks an important step in this journey. Located in the heart of Marin County, California, Spavia Marin, opening soon, is a luxury day spa designed to help guests relax, recenter, and renew. The spa uses naturally sourced and environmentally friendly products, many of which come from locally owned-and-operated farms. This focus supports a reduced environmental footprint and responsible sourcing while offering high-quality, luxury experiences to guests.
Spavia Marin also reflects a strong commitment to giving back. Its Spavia Cares program supports the local community and aligns closely with the values that guide Aurelia Lifestyle Brands. This shared purpose strengthens the connection between the business and the people it serves.
The Coach, Not the Athlete: Dr. Bolles on the Art of Board Leadership
Dr. Bolles brings Board experience in consumer businesses including Minted, Havenly, and BoatsGroup, and she’s also served on two public company boards. As SEAC Board Director, she led the Transaction Committee for the $4.6B spin-off of Lionsgate Studios, after being recommended for the role by Goldman Sachs.
As a Board Director, Dr. Bolles focuses on governance, oversight, and support for the management team; her role stays firmly rooted in strategy, not execution. “As a Board Director, you’re the coach, not the athlete,” she often says. She maintains a clear boundary from day-to-day operations and instead guides the business from a long-term, strategic perspective.
Inside the boardroom, her approach remains direct and intentional. Thoughtful questioning drives discussion, while challenges are addressed without hesitation. She places a high value on transparency, and strives to ensure the dialogue stays focused, constructive, and outcome-driven.
“Board Directors need to be comfortable providing feedback to the Management Team in the Boardroom, and the Management Team needs to be comfortable receiving and actioning that feedback,” Dr. Bolles states. “Conversely, CEOs should also be comfortable providing feedback to their Board Directors; it’s crucial to maintaining a healthy working relationship for feedback to be a two-way conversation.”
Discipline and Clarity at the Core of Success
Dr. Bolles has held senior executive roles at prominent public consumer businesses including Levi Strauss & Co., eBay, and Zynga, as well as private companies including Midi Health, Tradesy, and Ancestry. She’s been a CEO, COO, CFO, and she has managed multiple 9-figure P&Ls and led teams of hundreds of people. The key to her multiple successes? Discipline and clarity.
“In Silicon Valley, there’s a common belief that you should build a business and not think about the exit; in my view, this advice could not be more wrongheaded,” Dr. Bolles states. “All privately held companies should have a 3-5 year strategic and financial plan that lays out a path to a successful financial outcome, whether that’s an IPO, sale process, or simply strong profitability and generation of significant cash flow. In other words, start with the end goal and work backwards.”
Importantly, Dr. Bolles states, the Board and management team should all have alignment around the financial goals and the strategic path to achieving those goals. Then rigorously execute against the plan to achieve the goals, measuring progress along the way, and share that progress transparently, not only with the Board and the rest of the management team, but also, as appropriate, with employees.
Success, in her view, depends on excellence in both planning and execution. “My background in analytics and finance has enabled me to lead organizations through robust strategic and financial planning processes, whether the organization is an early-stage start-up or a large, publicly traded company,” Dr. Bolles explains.
According to Dr. Bolles, successful strategic planning processes combine strategy and finance into one planning exercise, rather than running them as separate, parallel processes. Crucially, robust strategic and financial plans are explicit about assumptions, ensuring organizations do not plan for everything to proceed perfectly, but rather, assume many things will proceed imperfectly. Importantly, pre-determined milestones create measurable checkpoints, ensuring that initiatives are neither pulled before they could reasonably have impact nor pulled after it was clear the initiative was ineffective.
When it comes to the successful execution of a strategic and financial plan, Dr. Bolles believes obsession with the customer experience is crucial for the long-term success of any consumer business. With few exceptions, Dr. Bolles explains, short-changing the customer to enhance profitability is almost never a winning strategy in the long-term. “Delighted customers become advocates: they post on social media, leave glowing reviews, and most importantly, tell their friends, making them not only customers but gratis brand ambassadors; the reverse is also true: unhappy customers also post on social media, leave scathing reviews, and become brand detractors.”
Operational efficiency also proves crucial for any business to achieve success. Non-customer facing aspects of the business are frequently replete with opportunities for enhancing profitability without compromising the customer experience, Dr. Bolles notes. Today, she explains, technology and AI offer opportunities to automate or partially automate non-customer facing tasks such as aspects of finance, human resources, customer insights, marketing, and supply chain. Automation reduces manual effort and improves accuracy, allowing teams to redirect focus toward higher-value work.
Financial discipline powers every thriving organization. Often, Dr. Bolles notes, a detailed examination of expenses can yield opportunities for efficiency by streamlining service providers, renegotiating agreements with vendors, and eliminating unnecessary expenses. “I always encourage employees to ‘think like an owner’ when considering a prospective expense; most of the time, upon reflection, the employee determines the initial ask is unnecessary when examined through this lens,” Dr. Bolles states. Careful management of expenses enables organizations to free up capital for strategic investment in key initiatives and priorities.
Collaboration Drives Performance
High-performing teams are foundational for any company’s success; thus, building and retaining high-performing teams is the most important task for any leader. Dr. Bolles often says, “all work is a team sport: no one ever accomplished anything impressive at the office by themselves.”
In Dr. Bolles’s view, building high-performing teams is not about having the right players, it’s about having the right team. “Looking at professional sports teams, you’ll find plenty of examples of teams with many star athletes that have a terrible season. Why? Because having star athletes doesn’t mean you have a winning team. Winning teams work well together, as a unit, complementing each other’s strengths, compensating for each other’s weaknesses, bringing a broad range of skills, perspective, and experience to the group,” she said.
As Dr. Bolles builds and leads teams, she places equal weight on skill and character, looking for individuals who combine creativity with resilience. “I’m looking for people who won’t give up when faced with obstacles, but rather, work hard to find creative solutions,” Dr. Bolles said. “I’m also looking for people who are true team players, who value team success over personal recognition.”
Balance within the team remains a constant focus for Dr. Bolles. She intentionally brings different styles together to strengthen outcomes. While some individuals focus on the broader vision, others bring precision to execution. She artfully combines data-driven perspectives grounded in logic with perspectives grounded in intuition and experience, allowing problems to be examined from multiple angles before decisions are made.
Diversity in background and experience adds another layer of strength. Long-term team members carry a deep understanding of the company’s journey, while new voices introduce fresh thinking. This combination maintains continuity without limiting innovation.
A strong emphasis on mentorship shapes the environments that Dr. Bolles builds. Team members feel encouraged to share ideas, take ownership, and contribute with confidence. The result is a team that remains aligned, motivated, and prepared to grow together.
Discipline, Risk, and Organizational Resilience
A clear and grounded mindset defines Dr. Bolles’s leadership approach as an executive and Board Director. Strong outcomes, in her view, come from disciplined planning; clarity in goal setting remains essential, and each goal must stand on realistic assumptions.
Teams under her guidance learn to question projections and test how they perform under pressure before moving forward. Frequently, projects will not proceed as planned; this is why it’s crucial to have contingencies in place that enable the business to continue to grow and be profitable, even when some assumptions regarding cost, upside, or timeline do not prove accurate, Dr. Bolles states.
Dr. Bolles also places a strong emphasis on contingency planning. As a Board Director, for example, she often asks the leadership team what the greatest risks are to hitting the company’s financial targets and what plans they have in place to mitigate those risks. “It’s imperative that the leadership team has proactively identified the risks and has plans in place to mitigate them,” Dr. Bolles states. This direct dialogue enables sharper decision-making and organizational resilience.
Early risk identification forms a core part of her philosophy. Instead of treating it as a one-time task, she positions it as an ongoing process embedded in regular decision-making. Attention extends to both external and internal factors that can disrupt progress. In today’s environment, for most businesses, Dr. Bolles counsels that risks should be inclusive of macro risks including geopolitical, macroeconomic, supply chain, AI, and competitive risk, as well as more micro risks such as business-specific and execution risk.
Vision, Values, and What Lies Ahead
Dr. Amy Bolles Gershkoff Bolles has spent her career proving that exceptional leadership is not a single act, but a sustained practice — one built on persistence, discipline, and an unshakable belief in the power of people. From the boardrooms of prestigious companies to the founding of Aurelia Lifestyle Brands, she has consistently delivered results while lifting others along the way. Her commitment to representation and mentorship reflects a leader who understands that true success is measured not only by financial outcomes, but by the doors opened for those who follow.
As she continues to grow businesses, guide boards, and champion emerging leaders, Dr. Bolles leaves little doubt that her most meaningful contributions may still lie ahead — rooted in the same purpose and rigor that have defined every chapter of her remarkable career.
